Life in general
Thomas Sowell’s book “Personal Odyssey” motivates me to want to live a fuller life by working harder and maximizing the opportunities I have. He lived a very difficult life. His mother abandoned him and his aunt raised him. She was a dysfunctional, vindictive women, which eventually drove him out of the home at 17 years of age. His family was jealous of him because he was smart. He dropped out of high school to work. He worked difficult jobs. It was not an easy life. But through hard work and perseverence, he grew into a great modern philosopher and writer. Today, I was overwhelmed by some experiences he shared. He spoke of a few kind professors and people, who along the way, encouraged him. I was reminded that hard work coupled by someone taking an interest in you can lead to greatness. Even Thomas Sowell, a consummate hard worker, had some lucky breaks, had some people looking out for him and encouraging him. I pay tribute to those people who took the time to help him along his journey. I am grateful for those who have helped me. I look forward to pursuing further higher education, hoping that a brilliant professor will take an interest in my potential as well. Thank heavens there are kind, compassionate people who believe it is important to help others.
