Dugouts and Bats
A dugout is a smoking device that includes a "bat" or metal smoking pipe and a built in storage device for your tobacco. The dugout is a rectangular, wooden object with two compartments and an enclosing lid. In one compartment you have the bat. The bat is usually made of metal but can also be ceramic. The bat is usually disguised as a cigarette but can also be a variety of colorful deviations of metal pipe. The compartment that fits the bat has a small spring so the device can be held upright while the bat is extracted. This is good since the device also holds the tobacco and you do not want to turn it over to retrieve the bat and spill the tobacco all over the ground. The second compartment is probably how the device got its name in the first place. The second compartment is a dug out area that holds a good amount of tobacco very conveniently. One can load up their metal bat simply by digging the end of it into this second compartment and twisting. Each time you do this you bat will be loaded with a fresh hit. The sharp edge of the recessed end of the cigarette bat allows the bat to be loaded by burrowing it into the tobacco compartment. Their are two types of tops commonly used for the dugout and bats, one is a sliding piece of wood, this kind is nice and passes through metal detectors well but they tend to stick over time. The second and more common type of lid it a piece of wood held by a screw that swivels to reveal the contents.
The dugout and bat metaphor alludes to the athletic sport baseball. While it is difficult to explain exactly how such metaphors come about, we can examine some possibilities. The dugout side of the dugout is created by drilling into a solid piece wood. That is probably how the device originally got its name. The pipe that was added later is often called a one-hitter because the recess holds only enough tobacco for one inhale. Because baseball bats are used to hit baseballs, this may be one explanation for the metaphorical term bat often applied to the one-hitter pipe. Also in real life dugouts there are a lot of bats lying around. Another explanation for this term is that some hitter pipes bear a shape resembling a small baseball bat. Either way the metaphor caught on and the name dugout and bat has stuck.

Best way to get autographs from the mets when they play at the Nationals stadium?
Im heading to the nationals stadium on wednesday to see the mets play them. I have very good seats (2nd row behind the visitor's (mets) dugout) and now my question... Im hoping to get some autographs from some mets players so what would be my best chance to get some?

ask them before the game when they are doing warmups or batting practice. they probably wont sign during or after a game. another suggestion: try going to the hotel where the mets stay at. wait outside by their team bus like a few hours before. if you can find out which hotel they stay at, then this is a great option. i have gotten a lot of autographs that way....
