Block Tickets

Avoid a Ticket in Five Seconds
What you do know is that the economy is in bad shape. What you also know is that many cities have been cracking down on unpaid parking tickets and car taxes as a means to close that budget gap. But what you don’t know is that motor vehicle enforcement is a sure means to help your City and State’s budget. Drivers have been talking, blogging and twittering about the astronomical costs they have incurred from Motor Vehicle Stops. What they did not know was how to avoid that traffic ticket in just five seconds.
No, it does not involve running from the police. You and I know that such an act alone turns a financial situation into a terminal life situation. What I am talking about is attitude; not the police officer’s attitude, but your attitude and, of course, your passenger’s. I have spoken to hundreds of my colleagues and they all agree that 75% of the time, they know, if they will be issuing a ticket to the driver that they stop, within the first three to five seconds of making personal contact with them. To clarify this, it means that as soon as the officer is walking up to the car and begins to see any part of you and your passenger. Now barring the conditions of you being in a stolen car, or wanted on some outstanding arrest warrant or you are in possession of some illegal drug or gun; on most normal traffic stops, the following suggestions should work.
As soon as you see the police car, attempting to pull you over, immediately slow down and begin to pull over to the far shoulder of the road. Do not stop in the middle of the intersection. Don’t stop in an area of the block that will cause the officer to be in danger of being hit by traffic when he/she gets out of the car. And certainly, don’t try and drive the extra two to three blocks to your house because you feel safer if your family can “watch you” while the police conduct the traffic stop.
Bottom line, if the police have to get on the PA or bull horn and tell you to pull over or ask you to pull into a better location, you are now starting with a 75% chance of getting the ticket. The “deal breaker” of course is the “street lawyer driver” who tries to drive the extra blocks home. While in route, if you try to discreetly call the house to have a “street lawyer” as a welcoming party outside to witness the scene, you are sure to get the biggest ticket of your life. You should know that the cops hate it when you do this, and it is extremely dangerous for you to do so because you escalate the motor vehicle stop to dangerous levels for you and for the police officer. Remember, cops are not mind readers and they do not know “the why” a motorist may do something. They can only predict and plan for “the how” a motorist may do something.
Now let’s say you followed all the proper guidelines to comply with the stop, you should turn out fine. Once again, I will give you a quick- guide version:
- As soon as you pull over the car, make sure that your radio/car stereo is off (the type of music that you may be playing could influence you getting a ticket). For example, what if the cop does not like rap music and therefore he/she is going to be slightly irritated with you from the beginning. What if the officer just broke up with his/her significant other and you’re playing the song that pisses them off because it brings bad memories. Not so good a start!
- Check your attitude! You “aren’t going to” beat a ticket with a nasty attitude. So don’t start off with “Officer you have got nothing better to do than to stop me!” Ticket! “Officer what are you stopping me for? I was not speeding!” Ticket! “You should be stopping those drug dealers, not me, don’t you think? Ticket! “Officer, Do you know Who I Am?” Ticket! Ticket! Ticket!
- When stopped, you should be instantaneously apologetic and remorseful. Be extra pleasant with your speech and speak clearly and articulately so that the officer can hear you. Look at the officer in the face, not necessarily in the eyes. But, occasionally make eye contact. Keep your hands visible at all times and keep movement to a bare minimum.
Remember it’s a 5-second audition that could cost you hundreds of dollars. So don’t blow it!
