Branson, Missouri - Hillbilly Shows and So Much More

Almost 130 years ago, in a small county of Taney in Missouri, a general store and post office manager named Reuben Branson launched the business center in that locale. The site was afterwards named after him and was incorporated in 1912. Throughout its early times in the 1880's, settlers began to move into the city, and one of them was William Henry Lynch.

Lynch acquired the Marble Cave in 1894 which was later called The Marvel Cave and started out a local tourism business. For a nominal fee a tourist could gain access to the cave. During the 1950's the Herschends leased the cave. They made several changes to Marvel Cave including concrete pathways and installing electric power, and in 1960 they also built Silver Dollar City.

Back in the 1890's, several brand new businesses such as hotels, banks and resorts emerged within the city due to lot of local travelers. The number of customers grew when "Shepherd of the Hills", a best selling story by Harold Bell Wright in 1907 became probably the most famous outdoor play featured in Branson City. Another draw to Branson became its Hillbilly Shows where the "Baldknobbers Jamboree" was the first to launch in 1959 and still running up today. Another Hillbilly Show - The Presleys were first to locate a show along Highway 76 and shortly following The Bladknobbers Jamboree moved their show to Highway 76 as well. More shows opened along the highway and the location is now referrred to as "The Strip". Branson has continued an impressive record of growth as shows continue to be added to The Strip and the city. The rapid growth of primarily music stage shows has earned Branson its current moniker as the "live music show capital of the world". The city has also become recognized as one of the prime places for family getaways in the United States.

Right now, the city of a little over 7,000 residents is the home of more than 22,000 hotels and lodging rooms providing a wide range of accommodations and vacation packages. Most of the Branson Hotels are located in the middle of the historical downtown district. The dwntown district plays host to fifty live music performance theaters, twelve world class golf courses, dozens of galleries, shopping centers, a wide selection of restaurants and bars, which will make the holiday getaway a one of kind experience that will definitely be unforgettable. It goes without saying that Silver Dollar City, one of the most popular theme parks in the US; and the original "Shepherd of the Hills" outdoor drama, playing its more than 5,000th live performance are Branson attractions you won't want to miss.
