Billiard Trick Shots and You
A trick shot is typically played on a billiards table although a snooker table can be used as well if you need the additional size. The balls are set up in a manner that would not usually appear in normal play, such as them all being lined up along the rail, several balls in a curved line or in some other unusual pattern. Many tricks involve the use of props like the rack, additional cues, and stacking balls on chalk. Most players use a special cue like a jump cue or a masse' cue. Trick shots are an actual cue sports discipline known as artistic pool.
Trick shot competitions are becoming more and more popular time goes by and with online promotion. There are even worldwide competitions for pool trick shots. There is the WPA Artistic Pool World Championship and the World Snooker Trickshot Championship. Competitions are often televised such as Trick Shot Magic and World Cup of Trick Shots.
There are many famous shots such as "Up and in" by World Champion Mike Massey; the cue ball is jumped off the table into a cowboy boot on the floor. There is "The Butterfly" where six object balls are grouped in the middle of the table in a butterfly shape; in a single shot, each ball drops into a different pocket of the table.
Trick shots have also played a part in the success of several movies such as Pool Hall Junkies and The Color of Money. These types of movies about billiards have quite the following and are often refered to in stories. They have also helped make famous many name brands featured in these movies.
If you are interested in learning some billiards artistry, there are many books and dvd's providing instruction in technique, setup and execution of some of the more famous shots. There are also more advanced instructional books and dvd's to help you become proficient in the more advanced techniques as well.
Remember, nobody was born able to do any fancy shots on a pool table, it takes practice and patience. Pick up a book, find a table and get busy. Who knows, you may find yourself on ESPN someday showing off your new tricks someday.
