Priest (2011) review

Despite all the hype and evocative trailers, the Scott Stewart film "Priest," falls well short of the mark and is a blatant mishmash of other genres with some decidedly average  3D effects thrown in for good measure. This could have been such a good film, but the lack of originality makes it and also ran that will appear on DVD sooner than planned.

It is set in a nameless and timeless apocalyptical setting, so you have no idea where or when you are meant to be. A vampire v vicar yarn that trundles along for what seems a very long 80 minutes lacks both big names and big thrills. The unexciting and predictable battle at the climax seems to imply that there is to be a sequel, the idea of such is both pitiful and laughable.

The animated sequence at the beginning, which contains the best acting of the entire film, establishes for the audience that mankind has retreated behind the great walls of many vile and polluted cities after losing innumerable battles with their main enemy, the vampires. They are now confined within gruesome underground camps somewhere a long way away.

Paul Bettany has the unenviable role of a venomous cleric known as ‘Priest', casting that seems to be based wholly on the fact he has a previous clerics role on his CV. Unlike his role in ‘The Da Vinci Code' however, he is no longer practicing due to the powers that be putting him out to grass so to speak.

Two highly unsatisfactory sequences set the scene for what is to follow, and the script by number does nothing to help the proceedings. The first sequence is very ‘Indiana Jones' where a band of soldiers/preachers run into an obvious trap in an underground maze that has been set by the vampires. Priest inevitably fails to save the life of his best mate who is unceremoniously torn apart by 30 beasts.

The second feels like a cheap western as crazy attackers invade a home set in the middle of nowhere and leave the Priests brother and sister in law for dead before abducting their daughter Lucy. Next thing we are back in the city of ‘Blade Runner' and the Priest is begging for his badge back so he can rescue Lucy from the baddies. Of course it is refused and he is ordered to go nowhere so he jumps on a motorbike and disappears.

He then is lucky enough to meet a lawman who teams up with him to track down the girl. The lawman Hicks is naturally in love with Lucy, and has to come to terms with the torment that if the vampires have bitten her, they will have to kill her. The monsignor who forbade him to leave sends a team of priest to hunt him down, but the main priestess is naturally really on the side of the renegade priest.

This film is incredibly tough going, you don't care about the characters and half way through will be willing on the vampires to put us all out of our misery. Don't waste your money on a cinema ticket, do something more exciting like washing your car instead.

How could a priest preach Gospel in such a special way?

it happened during this chinese new year.
we saw a blond man with a big luggage manage to thumb a lift.
it was impossible to hitch-hike in this samll town at midnight.
my son talked to him and he was going to give the man 100NT
to buy a ticket.
but the man told my son it was the way he preached Gospel and he asked for 1000NT donate.
I didn't tell my son how I felt because he was so happy to give the man 500.
In my country, we respect priests.
He didn't tell him anything good about his god but asked a 14-year-old boy for money right away.
I didn't stop my son not because his god. Because it was a very cold midnight and the foreigner was alone in my country.
People should change the way to preach Gospel, otherwise less people would believe it.

some times people are in your life not to give anything more than the opportunity for you to be charitable. It is good you allowed your son to give this gift. Perhaps great things are being done all because your son funded this priest. Look deeper. I think you already know all that I'm saying because you pose the question to begin with. It's also very good that you have raise your son to be generous and perceptive.

God Bless you and your Son.

Peace In Christ
