Special Places For Concert Performances

In terms of size one of the world's biggest music festivals of it's time was the inaugural Rock in Rio festival in 1985 that attracted an estimated 1.5 million people, who came to see acts such as Queen, AC/DC, Rod Stewart, James Taylor and the B-52's. Compare that to the UK's biggest outdoor concert promotion at Glastonbury, where the number of tickets available tops out at less than 138,000.

Some of the world's more iconic concert venues include buildings such as New York City's Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House and Vienna's Musikverein, where classical performances of Austria's string of accomplished composers are regularly performed in a fine architectural setting.

The Radio City Music Hall in New York's Rockefeller Center is another venue that has hosted some memorable concerts over the years, as has Rome's Parco Della Musica, a music complex that was built as part of the infrastructure for the 1960 Olympic Games and is reported to be the world's most visited music venue.

In terms of size, some unusual venues have been used to host huge concerts. In August 1969 the famous Woodstock festival was held on a farm outside New York City and attracted a reported 500,000, which compares with a similarly sized audience that watched Simon and Garfunkel's free concert in New York's Central Park in 1981.

In Europe this year there have been several popular and classical music performances that have been brought to life by using some particularly amazing venues and locations.

On the hillside to the north of Palma de Mallorca, sits the impressive Bellver Castle. The design of this castle, which towers above the city landscape below, is unusual, with several circular towers linked by curved walls. Only in recent years have the municipal authorities of Palma discovered the potential of the castle as a concert venue and there are now several concerts arranged each year in addition to the Castle's own music festival which takes place each August. The name of the castle translates as "beautiful view" and that is certainly what visitors can expect as they look out across Palma bay.

Along the coast of southern Turkey are some remarkably well preserved amphitheatres that are still capable of hosting modern day concerts. Other musicians who have performed at the amphitheatre include Sting, The Scorpions and Joan Baez. The capacity of the original theatre was up to 25,000 people although concerts now a smaller with authorities expressing some concern about potential damage. Another Roman amphitheatre in southern Turkey used for concert performances is the Aspendos theatre close to Antalya, which was built to take around 12,000 people. This 2000 year old structure is amazingly well preserved and every year is the venue for opera, ballet and classical music concerts during the summer months. The International Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival was held during June this year and organizers are already planning next year's festival.

On the Greek island of Rhodes the presence of the Grand Masters during the 14th and 15th centuries brought culture and fine architecture to the island and the Palace of the Grand Masters remains as an iconic reminder of that period in Rhodes Old Town today. The palace and gardens are one of the most popular tourist attractions of the town and regularly host music and other artistic performances in the grounds. During the month of September the town hosts an International Classical Music Festival that includes a variety of performers playing on different dates throughout the month. The Medieval Moat Theatre is a special performance venue that nestles under the towering facade of the palace and hosts various events during the summer months.

Finally, on the Canary island of Tenerife, one of the most spectacular architectural concert venues in Europe hosts most of the island's musical events. The stunning Auditorio de Tenerife is the work of Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, who has been responsible for many of Spain's more ambitious buildings in recent years including Bilbao airport and the communications tower built for the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992.
